Entering the New York City Marathon

Even though the lottery system has closed for international athletes to enter the NYC 2008 Marathon, there still might be other avenues to take.

The lottery is open to individuals with a U.S. address until June 1st, so if you have a friend in the US, that could be a go. Apparently it is a 1 in 2 chance compared to a 1 in 4 chance for international applicants. I know the Flight Centre in Canada have package tours to go and it is 1st in best dressed, check out www.flightcentreactive.com. It might mean having to make your own way to Canada and going from there. I know they are in the process of launching Flight Centre Active in Australia, so watch this space. (I just talked to a friend that works at Flight Centre and at this stage, you would have to be a Canadian resident – they are looking at ways of getting around this)

One more option is to check out what charities run in the marathon and hooking up with them. It would mean having to raise money, but they are all good causes. I was lucky enough to be accepted into the Lance Armstrong team and will be raising money for the fight against cancer.
